FENTON, Mich., — The State Bank has announced the retirement of John Wendling, Vice President and Business Development Officer, after a remarkable 51 years of dedicated service in the banking industry. John’s extensive career, marked by his kindness, passion, and unparalleled expertise, has enriched the lives of countless customers, colleagues, and community members.
John began his career on June 4, 1973, as a teller at The Montrose State Bank. He quickly advanced to the Loan Department, where he eventually managed the department, gaining invaluable knowledge of the banking industry. In 1986, at the age of 32, he was elected to the Board of Directors. By 1991, John had become the President and CEO of the bank, a role he held with distinction.
Throughout his career, John furthered his education by attending banking schools at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, the University of Wisconsin, Madison, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana.
In 2007, after The Montrose State Bank merged with Community State Bank of St. Charles, John was named Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Following another merger in 2016, John joined The State Bank as Vice President of Business Development and Commercial Loans.
Reflecting on his career, John said, “Growing up on a farm in Maple Grove, I was inspired by my family to pursue banking. My sisters worked in banks before me, and I saw how rewarding their careers were. It’s been a fulfilling journey, and I’m proud to have made a difference in people’s lives. I look forward to spending more time with my family and grandchildren, hunting, antique shopping, traveling, farming, and playing in a band. I am forever grateful for the support of the Board of Directors, managers, employees, and customers who have trusted and supported me over the years.”
